This malware is usually disguised as fake Google update packages offered on third-party sites. So the best advice on how to avoid it is to only use Google Play Store for updates and only download applications from official sources. There is no known case of this existing on the Google Play Store, but that could change in the future. So ensure you always download from the official author of the app to limit the chance of this happening to you!
